Associate Research Professor Dora Hughes, MD, MPH, will join the senior leadership team at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and will serve as Senior Advisor at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) at the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Her role will include leading CMMI’s health equity work, as well as providing input on the development and implementation of new care models and payment approaches for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.
As a faculty member in the Department of Health Policy and Management, Dr. Hughes' work has focused on the intersection of clinical and community health, social determinants of health, health equity, healthcare quality and workforce. Previously, she served for nearly four years in the Obama Administration as Counselor for Science & Public Health to Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at HHS. In that position, her areas of responsibility included implementation of public health and FDA-related provisions of the Affordable Care Act, as well as signature legislation for tobacco, Alzheimer’s, and FDA reform.
As much as we in the Department will miss Dr. Hughes, we're happy to see her put her substantial expertise to work for the benefit of the public, particularly the millions of people with Medicare and Medicaid coverage who stand to benefit from equity improvements. Congratulations and best wishes, Dr. Hughes!
